The Toronto Market

The Toronto TSX composite index gained 40.32 points, or 0.20%, to close at 20,223.08. The TSX managed to stay in green even though the declined stocks outnumbered the gaining stocks today. The US markets were mixed.

                                                                               

The Energy sector led the gaining sectors today with a 1.61%. A gain of 1% or more for a sector on at a market session is usually a good performance. This also depends on the relative weights of the individual stocks within the sector. Durable Consumer Goods & Services gained 0.49% while Financials gained 0.10%. Utilities declined a mere -0.01%. Technology was down -1.43%. A number of the technology  stocks suffered losses. Healthcare was down -1.835. Healthcare was up 2.98% at yesterday’s market so the sector gave back some of the gains today.

Today’s Statistics:   The declined issues (decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (advancers) today. The ratio of decliners to advancers was 1.23-to-1.00. In real numbers, 747 decliners to 607 advancers with 223 unchanged. There were 27 new 52-week highs and 31 new 52-week lows. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was 226,403,728 or 65.5%; the total volume for declined stocks was 107,724,427 or 31.2% and 11,694,306 or 3.4% for “Unchanged”.

The total volume of stocks traded today was 345,822,461 compared to 328,031,925 yesterday an increase of 5.4%.

 

The US Market

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 87.13 points, or 0.25%, to close at 34,663.72.  The S&P 500 gained 29.97 points, or 0.67%, to close at 4,487.46. The Nasdaq Composite gained 156.37 points, or 1.14%, to close at 13,917.89.

Energy was the best performing sector at the US market today wit ha gain of 1.82%. Technology was the worst performing with a -1.47% decline. Financials  gained 0.68% as most of the big US banks gained today. Healthcare was down -0.19%.

 

Today’s Statistics: Today, the declined issues (decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (advancers) on both the NYSE and NASDAQ. The ratio of decliners to advancers on the NYSE was 1.15-to-1. In real numbers, 2,054 decliners to 1,779 advancers with 314 unchanged. There were 93 new 52-week highs and 126 new 52-week lows. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 446,803,938 or 54.8%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 360,854,554 or 44.3%; and 7,788,528 or 1.0% “Unchanged”.

The total volume of stocks traded on the NYSE today was 815,447,020 compared to 809,129,504 yesterday an increase of 0.007% – rather marginal. The volume today was the recent daily average.

On the NASDAQ, the ratio of decliners to advancers was 1.25-to-1. The decliners prevailed today.  In real numbers, 2,381 decliners to 1,904 advancers with 425 unchanged. There were 61 new 52-week highs and 197 new 52-week lows. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 2,502,808,277 or 53.3%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 2,121,029,206 or 45.1% and 75,017,460 or 1.6% for “Unchanged”.

The total volume of stocks traded today was 4,698,854,943 compared to 4,661,593,721 yesterday an increase of 0.008% which is marginal given the volume size involved but could be critical depending on your circumstance.
