The Toronto Market

The Toronto TSX composite index was down -136.50 points or -0.67% to close at 20,107.97. The TSX declined today after six consecutive market sessions of gains. A controlled decline is preferred to stocks getting extended and then suffering a major decline or even a collapse.

                                                                                                                                                                            

Basic Materials was the only sector to finish in green on the TSX today. Technology was down -0.26%; telecommunication services was down -0.45%; Energy was down -0.61% while Financials was down -0.85%. Today was a day of broad-based decline.

Aluminum, with a gain of 10.81%, continued the lead from yesterday as the top gaining Canadian Industry. Air Freight & Courier Services followed with 2.08% gain; Casinos and Gaming gained 1.36%; Precious Metals & Minerals gained 1.23% and Banks gained 0.75%.

Today’s Statistics: The declined issues (decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (advancers) by a ratio of 2.24-to-1.  In real numbers, 955 decliners to 425 advancers with 201 Unchanged. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was 102,013,955 or 35.4%; the total volume for declined stocks was 173,958,973 or 29.9% and 12,308,455 or 4.3% for “Unchanged”.

There were 50 new 52-Week Highs and 18 new 52-Week Lows. The bullish trend remains intact.

The total volume of stocks traded at the TSX today was 288,281,383 compared with 250,228,063 yesterday, a 15% increase in volume. Today’s volume of 288,281,383 is about 3% higher than the average of the ten most recent market sessions.

 

The US Markets

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down -62.75 points, or -0.18%, to close at 35,088.29. The S&P 500 was down -9.69 points, or -0.20%, to close at 4,538.19. The Nasdaq Composite declined -84.55 points or -0.59%, to close at 14,199.98.

Five of the major sectors at the US markets gained today. Basic Materials gained  0.55%; Healthcare gained 0.26%; Utilities gained 0.08%;  Telecommunication Services gained 0.03%; Industrials declined 0.03%; Energy declined -0.27%;  Financials declined -0.48% while Technology had the worst performance for the day with a decline of -0.67%.

Marine Transportation was the top performer today with a whopping 20.26% gain. Coal followed with 11.24% gain for the day; Investment trusts  gained 8.91%; Advertising/Marketing gained 7.8% while Real Estate Operations gained 7.52%.

Today’s Market Statistics: Today, the declined issues (decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (advancers) on the NYSE. The ratio of decliners to advancers on the NYSE was 2.29-to-1. In real numbers, 2,542 decliners to 1,448 advancers with 285 “Unchanged”. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 270,265,537 or 32.3%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 557,833,561 or 66.7%; and 7,811,293 or 0.9% “Unchanged”.

There were 136 new 52-Week Highs and 58 new 52-Week Lows.

The total volume of stocks traded on the NYSE today was 835,910,391 compared with 827,112,937 yesterday, a 1% increase. Investors largely took a pass today when compared to Friday. Today’s total volume, of 835,910,391 shares traded was about 9% below the average of the ten most recent market sessions.

On the NASDAQ, the decliners outnumbered the advancers. The ratio of decliners to advancers on the NYSE was 2.29-to-1. In real numbers, 3,020 decliners to 1,316 advancers with 330 “Unchanged”. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 1,366,066,335 or 32.3%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 2,818,395,972 or 66.6%; and 48,401,870 or 1.1% “Unchanged”.

There were 74 new 52-Week Highs and 147 new 52-Week Lows.

The total volume of stocks traded today was down by a good margin from normal daily average. The total volume of 4,232,864,177 compared to 4,455,873,523 yesterday, a 5% decrease. The volume of stocks traded today at 4,232,864,177 was 8% lower than the average volume of the ten most recent market sessions.

The market outlook remains uptrend positive.

10 –year Treasury Yield:   The 10-year yield was little changed today at 4.416%.

The Toronto Market

Shopify Inc. (TSX:SHOP) is the stock to keep an eye on. A little pull back may be in order to avoid being extended but the stock looks ready to continue climbing.

The US Markets

Nvidia (NVDA) released bumper earning results after regular  market hours today but the stock fell.

Tesla may be ready to resume an uptrend.
