The Toronto Market

The Toronto and Montreal markets were closed today for the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday.

 

The US Markets

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 197.07 points, or 0.59%, to close at 33,604.65.  The S&P 500 gained 27.16 points, or 0.63%, to close at 4,335.66. The Nasdaq Composite was up 52.90 points, or 0.39%, to close at 13,484.24.

The Dow Jones Index opened about 120 points lower than Friday’s closing. However, by late morning it started to climb and crossed higher than Friday’s closing, declined below that figure in the afternoon, climbed back to about 230 points and finally closed almost 200 points above Friday’s closing. The expectation that the two day old war in the Middle East will affect the market did not materialize. NASDAQ and the S&P 500 had similar volatility patterns but were little less volatile than the Dow Jones index during the session.

All the major sectors of the US market ended up with gains today. It was a broad based positive market. Energy led the gains with a quite respectable 3.39%. Telecommunications Services followed with 1.27%. Industrials gained 1.015 while Utilities gained 0.92%. Technology led the sectors with smaller gains. It gained 0.38%; Durable Consumer Goods and Services gained 0.21%; Healthcare gained 0.20%; Financials gained 0.13% and Basic Materials gained 0.10%.

Today’s Statistics: Today, the gaining issues (advancers) outnumbered the declined issues (decliners) on the NYSE but not on the NASDAQ. The ratio of advancers to decliners on the NYSE was 2.19-to-1. In real numbers 2,672 advancers to 1,219 decliners with 243 “Unchanged”. There were 40 new 52-Week Highs and 132 new 52-Week Lows. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 514,706,546 or 65.2%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 257,983,592 or 32.7%; and 16,809,771 or 2.1% “Unchanged”.

The total volume of stocks traded on the NYSE today was 789,499,909, compared to 984,628,627 on Friday. Today’s volume, of 789,499,909 shares traded was lower than the recent 10-day average.

 

On the NASDAQ, the advancers and the decliners were about at par but the decliners managed to outnumber the advancers. The ratio of decliners to advancers was 1.03-to-1.  For every one hundred advancers there were one hundred and three decliners.  In real numbers, 2,167 decliners to 2,140 advancers with 393 unchanged. There were 46 new 52-Week Highs and 325 new 52-Week Lows. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 2,130,844,741 or 54.5%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 1,735,814,248 or 44.4% and 40,951,743 or 1.1% for “Unchanged”.
