The Toronto Market

The Toronto TSX composite index declined a whopping -273.94 points, or -1.34%, to close at 20,218.89. Today was a rough day at the Toronto market. The decline was broad based and commenced early in the market and persisted.  The TSX has turned back around the 20.600 points level three times during the past three months. The 20,600 appears to have become a resistance level for the index.

                                             

There was not a single sector that was able to escape today’s rough and tough market session. The best performing sector today was Durable consumer Goods and Services. The sector declined -0.78%. Financials declined -0.87%, followed by Energy which declined -1.02%. Basic materials declined -1.88%; Healthcare declined -1.89%; Utilities declined -2.00% and Technology was the worst performing sector and it declined -2.14%.

Today’s Statistics:   The declined issues (decliners) took control today and completely outnumbered the gaining issues (advancers). The ratio of decliners to advancers was 4.72-to-1.00. In real numbers, 1,171 decliners to 248 advancers with 193 unchanged. There were 16 new 52-week highs and 47 new 52-week lows. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was a paltry 35,144,786 or 11.6%; the total volume for declined stocks was 256,585,641 or 85.0% and 10,157,493 or 3.4% for “Unchanged”.

The total volume of stocks traded today was 301,887,920 compared to 369,255,598 yesterday an 18.8% decrease.

This is certainly not a market for beginners.

The US Market 

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined -106.57 points, or -0.31%, to close at 34,517.73.  The S&P 500 declined -9.58 points, or -0.22%, to close at 4,443.95. The Nasdaq Composite declined -32.05 points, or -0.23%, to close at 13,678.19.

Telecommunications and Healthcare were the only two of the major sectors of the US market to finish today’s market session gaining. Financials declined -0.05% while Technology declined -0.18%. Energy was down -0.47%. Utilities was the worst performing sector today with a decline of -0.55%. There were no sectors with big decline and also none with big gain.

Today’s Statistics: Today, The declined issues (decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (advancers) on both the NYSE and NASDAQ. The ratio of decliners to advancers on the NYSE was 1.67-to-1. In real numbers 1,451 advancers to 2,423 decliners with 303 unchanged. There were 70 new 52-week highs and 147 new 52-week lows. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 348,364,260 or 37.3%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 572,014,516 or 61.2%; and 13,569,495 or 1.5% “Unchanged”.

The total volume of stocks traded on the NYSE today was 933,948,271 compared to 957,601,333 yesterday an increase of 17.4%. The volume gapped up well beyond the usual daily average.

On the NASDAQ, the ratio of decliners to advancers was 1.48-to-1. The decliners prevailed today.  In real numbers, 2,583 decliners to 1,747 advancers with 423 unchanged. There were 48 new 52-week highs and 306 new 52-week lows. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 1,973,018,337 or 43.0%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 2,553,911,724 or 55.6% and   66,490.64 or 1.4% for “Unchanged”.

The total volume of stocks traded today was 4,593,420,702 compared to 4,896,996,951 yesterday a decline of 6.2%.

Oil and the money markets:  U.S. crude oil prices fell 0.3% to $91.20 a barrel, after hitting $93.74 earlier in the day.

10 –year Treasury Yield:   The 10-year Treasury yield rose 5 basis points to nearly 4.37%, the highest since Oct. 31, 2007. The two-year yield climbed 5 basis points to 5.11%, a 17-year high.

 

Stocks In The News/Stocks To Watch:

The Toronto Market

Some stocks are doing their best to defy the current rough market. Only nineteen of the over a thousand stocks listed on the Toronto market gained 0.1% or higher today.

Shares of Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) declined -0.51% or -$0.24 to close at C$46.82 today. The closing price is $3.55 short of its 52-week high ($50.37), which the company achieved on November 4th. The volume of shares traded was 4.7M which is below the 50-day average volume of 9.6M for the stock.

North West Company Inc. (TSX:NWC) was down -$0.08 or -0.22% to close at $35.78. The volume of shares traded was 200.3K

Shares of Cameco Corp. (TSX:CCO) declined -$1.93 or -3.54% to close the session at $52.61. The volume of shares traded was 1.4M.

 

The US Market

PayPal Inc.  (PYPL),  a previous leader in the payments technology industry seems not ready make the climb back up in price any time soon. Today, PYPL was down -$0.75 or -1.19% to close at $62.19. the volume of shares traded was 11.4M.

Tesla Inc (TSLA) may be getting ready reclaim previous heights if and when the market changes its current character. Today the stock closed at $266.50.
