The Toronto Market

The Toronto TSX composite index declined -80.91 points or -0.41% to close at 19,743.94. Today, the TSX truncated last weeks’ five consecutive sessions of gains by declining 80 points. The TSX gained at every market session last week.

                                                                                                                                                                   

Durable Consumer Goods & Services  with a gain of 0.82%, was the top performing sector at today’s Toronto market session. Discretionary Consumer Goods & Services was next among the sectors with a gain of 0.15%. Utilities was next with -0.10% decline. Financials declined -0.32%; Healthcare declined -0.39%; Energy declined -0.56% and Technology declined -0.58%.  Basic materials declined -1.09%.  The market declined today but the declines were relatively within reasonable range especially given that the market was on a tear all of last week. The indexes need to “rest and take a breath” before possibly resuming the upward climb and keep the rally going.

Paper Products with a gain of 3.66%;  Coal with a gain of 3.50%;  Semiconductors with a gain of 3.03%; Aluminum with a gain of 2.50% and Home Furnishing with a gain of 2.42% were the top industry performers at the market session today.

Today’s Statistics: The declined issues (decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (advancers) by a ratio of 1.85-to-1.00.  In real numbers, 924 decliners to 500 advancers with 196 Unchanged. The total volume of shares traded for gaining stocks was 71,073,909 or 25.8%; the total volume for declined stocks was 196,648,044 or 71.3% and 8,129,615 or 2.9% for “Unchanged”.

There were 25 new 52-Week Highs and 13 new 52-Week Lows. It is quite bullish that the new 52-Week Highs doubled the new 52-Week Lows.

The total volume of stocks traded at the TSX today was 275,851,568 compared 333,879,992 on Friday, a 17%, decrease. Today’s volume of 275,851,568 was below the average of the most recent ten-market sessions.

 

The US Markets

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 34.54 points or 0.10%, to close at 34,095.86. The S&P 500 was up a paltry 7.64 points, or 0.18%, to close at 4,365.98. The Nasdaq Composite was up 40.50 points or 0.30%, to close at 13,518.78. The market was choppy today but the indexes managed to close in green.

Healthcare with 0.46% gain;  Technology with 0.45% gain and Durable Consumer Goods & Services with 0.11% gain were the three sectors to close up today. The other sectors ended up in red with Financials  declining -0.71% and Energy declining -0.89% as the worst performing sectors.

Marin Port Services gained 5.81% to lead the top performing industries at today’s market session. Airport Services with 2.35% gain and Steel with a gain of 2.23% were next.

Today’s Market Statistics: Today, the declined issues (decliners) outnumbered the gaining issues (advancers) on the NYSE. The ratio of decliners to advancers on the NYSE was 2.33-to-1. In real numbers, 2,771 decliners to 1,186 advancers with 246 “Unchanged”. The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 219,960,284 or 23.2%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 718,649,978 or 75.7%; and 4,902,061 or 1.1% “Unchanged”. There were 64 new 52-Week Highs and 43 new 52-Week Lows.

The total volume of stocks traded on the NYSE today was 949,358,898 compared to 1,119,017,319 Friday, a 15% decrease. Today’s total volume, of 949,358,898 shares traded was lower than the average of the most recent ten-market sessions.

On the NASDAQ, the decliners outnumbered the advancers today. There were 2,757 decliners to 1,568 advancers with 341 unchanged, a ratio of 1.75-to-1.  The total volume of volume-gaining stocks was 1,343,560,886 or 30.1%; the total volume of declined-volume stocks was 3,092,134,001 or 69.4% and 21,456,434 or 0.5% for “Unchanged”. There were 47 new 52-Week Highs and 113 new 52-Week Lows.

The total volume of stocks traded today was 4,457,151,321 compared to 5,097,993,461 yesterday, a 9.2% increase. The volume of stocks traded today at 4,457,151,321 was higher than the average volume of the most recent ten market sessions.

10 –year Treasury Yield:   The 10-year Treasury yield fell one basis point to 4.65%, a rather marginal decline.
